Seguin Island Lighthouse, Maine

U.S. Coast Guard Photo
I have always found lighthouses to be mysterious and ghostly structures. Perhaps it's the remote locations, the crashing waves and rocky cliffs, or the feeling of isolation. Whatever the reason, most lighthouses have eerie tales to go along with their history. Seguin Island Lighthouse is no exception.

The lighthouse was established in 1795, although the present structure was built in 1857. It sits at the mouth of the Kennebec River.

There are several stories about Seguin Island and the lighthouse, including a sea serpent sighting in 1875 reported in the American Sentinel! Ghost sightings include a story about a young girl who died and is buried on the island and a Coast Guard officer being awakened in the night by an apparition. The most famous story is a tragic tale of a former lighthouse keeper and his wife in the mid-1800's. The keeper bought his young wife, who felt very lonely in such an isolated place, a piano to play. The piano was shipped to the house, but only arrived with one sheet of music. The wife played this same tune over and over, sometimes for hours without a break. It is said that eventually, it drove the keeper mad and he destroyed the piano, killed his wife, and then killed himself with an axe!
Allegedly, piano music can still be heard in the wind.

The Seguin Island Lighthouse is kept up by Friends of Seguin Island Light Station, Maine. The lighthouse is open for tours during the summer.
